Up ahead through the stormy gray fog and the under a dark night sky, a giant building looms from outside your carriage window. The sound of horse hooves only drew you closer, and you can't help but be captivated and shaken by the gothic beauty of the new "home" that you are soon to live in. Gargoyles line the rooftop and the shingles made of dark hues, tall ominous steeples line the four farthest corners of the sanitarium. You jump as the black wrought iron gates shut behind you and suddenly you feel trapped. But before you could think about it anymore, you find your eyes drawn to a rather peculiar shaped knocker on the giant wooden doors. The knocker took the form of the head of a rat. As if compelled by some unseen force, you exit the horse carriage as it stops in front of the building, and you reach out to the metal ring, knocking on the door three times. The doors swing open of their own accord, and inside, you see all manners of furniture and old paintings. On the roof is a glowing chandalier, and an elegant grande staircase rose to the second floor.
"Greetings, my darling." The small voice takes you off guard as you gasp in shock. It almost felt as if it was whispering in your ear... "I am your host today, Mistress Blackmore, and I shall be giving you a tour around your new...home."
You look around for the source of the tiny feminine voice, one that carried an English accent, but it isn't until you look at your feet that you realize who spoke. A rat no bigger than the size of your hand stares back up at you with glowing red eyes, a smirk... yes, a smirk on her face. The small creature was dressed much like a noble Victorian woman would could she afford the expense. The dress was elegant, her hair pulled up into a bun. A rat in clothes? Why...
"Why are you here, you must be wondering?" she continued lightly. "Why, you were proven to be insane of course. Whether you are truly insane, or perhaps an innocent snatched up to be wrongly thrown into the asylum is of no matter. Either way, you shall soon be made to live here the rest of your life. Come now, have you never seen a talking rat before?"
As you shake your head, she frowns. "Tsk, tsk. You have much to learn about this place and about... us. This is no ordinary place. Come with me. I have much you show you."
In this sanitarium, we, the inmates, have been deemed insane and brought to this place to spend the rest of our lives under the speculation of the sanitarium doctors. Those are a bunch of people that you do not want to encounter.
So are you insane indeed, or are you perhaps innocent? Either way, it is in your best interest to try and escape this place before it's too late. No one has ever gotten out of the asylum before, but who knows if you'll be the first?
But you cannot escape alone. In the sanitarium, there are multitudes of different kinds of rats that have made this place their home. The first of which, is the Victorian Thea Rat. They are the crafty ones, and then there are other breeds that are more nimble, creative, intelligent, fast... all breeds have an advantage, and some breeds may even up the chance of your escape. It's up to you to plot your escape from this place. Perhaps you could even rescue other inmates, who knows. But until you figure it out, you'll be stuck in this place.
